Siding that keeps water out
Siding is the main barrier between the weather and your walls. When boards crack, warp, come loose or rot, rain can get behind them and into the sheathing and framing, where the damage is out of sight until it is serious.

Siding types
Vinyl, fiber cement and wood siding
- Vinyl. Low maintenance and never needs paint, but it can crack from impacts and warp from heat, and loose panels can blow off in high wind.
- Fiber cement (often called Hardie). Durable, resistant to rot and insects, and holds paint well. Damaged boards and failed caulk at joints are the usual repairs.
- Wood. A classic look, but it needs regular painting or staining, and in a humid climate it is prone to rot where water sits.

Choosing
Repair or replace your siding?
Repairing damaged sections makes sense when the problem is limited and matching material is available. Updating larger areas, or the whole house, can make more sense when:
- Damage or rot is widespread
- Old siding can no longer be matched
- The siding is near the end of its life
- You are updating the look of the house or changing materials, often as part of a whole-house remodel or addition
Any time siding comes off, the sheathing and framing behind it should be checked for water damage and repaired before new siding goes on.
