Before you build
What to plan before building an outbuilding
- Placement. Where the building sits affects access, drainage, views and how it looks from the house and the road.
- The ground. Most outbuildings need a level, well-drained site and a solid base. See grading, pads and slab foundations.
- Access. Garages and carports need a driveway that holds up. See driveways and concrete flatwork.
- Power and water. If you want lights, outlets or a sink, plan for it from the start.
- Rules for your property. Deed restrictions, HOA rules and city or county requirements can limit size, location and use. Check them early.
- Future plans. A little extra size now can save building a second structure later.
If you are also building a new home, it usually makes sense to plan garages and outbuildings at the same time, so the site work, slabs and driveways are laid out once.

An outbuilding is only as good as the ground and slab under it. When the site prep, the concrete and the building are handled by different companies, small mismatches, such as a slab that sits too low or drains toward the door, become your problem.

Do you pour the slab for garages and outbuildings?
Yes. We handle land clearing, grading and slab foundations as well as the building itself, so the ground, the slab and the structure are planned together.
What is the difference between a carport and a pavilion?
A carport is an open-sided cover for vehicles. A pavilion is a covered outdoor gathering space, often timber-framed, for cooking, eating and entertaining.
Can I put an outbuilding anywhere on my property?
Not always. Deed restrictions, HOA rules and city or county requirements can limit size, location and use, and the site needs good drainage and access. Check the rules for your property early.
