- An attached garage connects to the house, so you can walk inside without going out in the rain. Adding one to an existing home is really a home addition, because it ties into the house's roof, walls and foundation.

Planning
How big should your garage be?
Most people wish their garage were bigger. When sizing, think about:
- What you will park. Full-size trucks and boats on trailers need more length and door height than a car.
- Walking room around vehicles so doors open and you can get past them.
- Storage for mowers, tools, shelving and seasonal gear.
- A workbench or shop area if you plan to work on projects.
- What the property allows. Deed restrictions, HOA rules and setbacks can limit size and placement.
The process
How a detached garage comes together
- Pick the spot. Placement for access from the drive, drainage and how it looks from the house.
- Prepare the site. Clearing and grading so the building sits level and water drains away.
- Pour the slab. A concrete slab sized for the building.
- Build the structure. Framing, roof, siding and doors.
- Tie it in. A concrete or gravel apron and driveway connection.
If you want lights and outlets in the garage, plan for power from the start.
